The Weight of Freedom: Nate Leipciger in conversation with Arla Litwin and Doris Bergen

Nate Leipciger was a teenager when the war ended in May 1945. Together with his father, he had survived a terrifying series of ghettos and labor camps in German-occupied Poland, the killing centre of Auschwitz-Birkenau, a death march, and typhus. Yet the joy of liberation was subsumed by fear and then realization that his beloved mother and sister had not survived, and that his family, community, and home were all gone. Please join us to listen and reflect with Nate on his memories of the Holocaust and his experiences in the decades since as he built a life and family in Canada, and continues to share his story of loss, courage, and strength.

Participants:

Nate Leipciger, born in Chorzów, Poland in 1928, is a Holocaust survivor, educator, and author of The Weight of Freedom, published by the Azrieli Foundation. He regularly participates in the March of the Living, which brings young people to sites of the Holocaust and Jewish life in Poland and Israel. In 2019, he received an honourary degree from the University of Toronto.
