Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies Programs
The Jewish Studies program is a Type 1 program meaning that it has unlimited enrolment and no specific admission requirements. All students who have completed at least 4.0 FCEs, or full-course equivalents, are eligible to enrol. There are no specific first-year requirements for any of the programs; however, first-year students are encouraged to take Jewish Thoughts (CJS200H1) and/or Jewish Culture (CJS201H1). Students are also welcome to take Hebrew Language courses (MHB155H1 and MHB156H1), and Yiddish (GER260H1).
Specialist in Jewish Studies
10.0 FCEs (including at least 4.0 FCEs at the 300+ level and at least 1.0 FCE at the 400-level.)
1. CJS200H1 or CJS201H1
2. 1.0 FCE at the 400 level in any of the four areas of Jewish Studies (see ATCJS website for the list of approved and available courses: www.cjs.utoronto.ca/undergraduate/courses).
3. 3.0 FCEs or proof of proficiency in one of the following languages: Aramaic, Hebrew, Yiddish (i.e. MHB155H1/MHB156H1/MHB255H1/MHB256H1/MHB355H1/MHB356H1/NML155H1/NML156H1/NML255H1/NML256H1/
NML355H1/NML356H1/GER260Y1/GER360H1/GER460H1/GER463Y1). Other languages are accepted with special permission by the ATCJS Undergraduate Director. Students entering the program with requisite linguistic proficiency in a Jewish language will choose any 3.0 FCEs in an area of concentration (see below) in addition to the regular requirements described in section 4.
4. 5.0 FCEs in any of the four areas of Jewish Studies.
Note: From section 3 and 4, at least 4.0 FCEs at the 300+ level.
5. DTS300H1 or 0.5 FCE to satisfy the Quantitative Reasoning competency of the program, to be chosen from courses in Jewish Studies developing this competency. If none is available, 0.5 FCE from Breadth Requirement Category #5: The Physical & Mathematical Universe, or 0.5 FCE approved by the Undergraduate Director.
Major in Jewish Studies
6.5 FCEs (including at least 2.0 FCEs at the 300+ level and at least 0.5 at the 400-level).
1. CJS200H1 or CJS201H1
2. 0.5 FCE in a 400-level course in any area of Jewish Studies (see ATCJS website for the list of available courses for any given year)
3. 5.5 FCEs in any of the four areas of Jewish Studies, with at least 2.0 FCEs at the 300+ level.
4. DTS300H1 or 0.5 FCE to satisfy the Quantitative Reasoning competency of the program, to be chosen from courses in Jewish Studies developing this competency. If none is available, 0.5 FCE from Breadth Requirement Category #5: The Physical & Mathematical Universe, or 0.5 FCE approved by the Undergraduate Director.
Minor in Jewish Studies
4.0 FCEs (including at least 1.0 FCE at the 300+ level).
