Should we see it as a Fatherland? Jews and Yiddish in Hungary
Centered on Yiddish and language usage, the lecture will give a brief history of Jewish life in 19th century Hungary. Although all streams of the Jewish community had to give answers to emancipation and the general trends of assimilation, among these it is mainly the extreme orthodox and the Magyarizing Neolog that are known and researched. It is, however, also intriguing to look at the influence that these societal changes had on language usage and to unveil more nuanced layers as well, to see how language forms a crucial part of identity. Unraveling these phenomena provides a better understanding on present-day jewish experiences in Hungary.
